Assistive Technology and Specialized Equipment

All schools have access to assistive software to support learning. This software is free to schools and available to be installed on all LDCSB computers.

 

Premier

The Ministry provides Specialized Equipment Amount (SEA) funding to school boards to assist with the costs of assistive technology and equipment essential to support students with special needs. Training is also provided for staff and students.
 
 

 What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology is any technology that allows one to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with special learning needs.” (Edyburn,2000).
 

Its applications and adaptations can help open doors to previously
inaccessible learning opportunities for many children with special needs.”

“Assistive technology, sometimes referred to as adaptive or access technology, includes a whole realm of high and low technology devices designed to increase the independence of individuals with learning disabilities by enabling them to compensate for deficits, enhance self-confidence, and participate more fully in all settings.” Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO).

 

Specialized Equipment

Special equipment assists with the physical, personal care and safety needs of students with special needs (physical disabilities, communication…)
