HOUSE-LEAGUE BASKETBALL

PHILOSOPHY

House-League Basketball is very similar to regular basketball, with only a few exceptions, such as the length of the game.

HOUSE LEAGUE BASKETBALL RULES

INTERMEDIATE

1. The Game:

a) Games will be two (2) halves – each seven (7) minutes with straight time.

b) One (1) minute intermission between halves.

c) In case of a tie at the end of the second half, there will be a three (3) minute straight time overtime period. If a tie still exists at the end of this overtime period, then the first free shot situation will take place. Each member of the two teams involved will take one shot from the foul shot line.

2. Each team is responsible for:

a) their own transportation

b) one senior student to act as timer or scorer or referee assistant.

c) own practice balls clearly marked with school name.

d) team markers

e) a teacher or parent to be with the team.

3. The Department of Physical Education will supply the:

- scorebooks
- timers
- game balls

It is NOT necessary to bring these.

4. Substitution:

Each team is made up of five (5) members, but you are allowed to carry a maximum of six (6). Each member will play equal time. Only the names entered on the house-league entry form will be allowed to play. No substitutions of names. (The only exception will be in case of an injury.. and this would be rare).

REGULATIONS:

a) After five (5) personal faults, any player is disqualified from further action.

b) After a team has committed four (4) personal fouls per half, the bonus shot is in effect.

c) The foul shot line will be 4.5 metres from the backboard.

d) The three (3) second rule will also be in effect.

e) The ten (10) second rule will also be in effect.

NOTE: ALL OTHER REGULATIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED ACCORDING TO THE “OFFICIAL BASKETBALL RULE BOOK”. This is available in any public library and most sports stores.

The scorers and the timers should be capable of performing the following:

THE SCORER:

a) Report to officials’ table
b) Record field goals made
c) Record free throws made and missed.
d) Keep a running summary of points scored.
e) Record personal fouls, (e.g. P1, P2, P3 etc.)
f) Keep a record of names and numbers of players.
g) Notify official when fifth (5th) person foul on a player.
h) Keep track of bonus situation (B______if attempt is successful, bonus throw is awarded).

THE TIMER:

a) Report to officials’ table
b) Time the complete game (2 halves, 7 minute straight time halves).
c) The clock starts when the ball is legally tapped on the first jump ball.
d) Never have to stop the clock, except at the end of halves. Only other exception will be serious injury – the head official will make the decision to stop the clock.
