 Celebrating Earth Day

Students and staff across the LDCSB took part in Earth Day activities on Wednesday - doing their bit to help the environment and spread the message of the need for environmental conservation. Students at St. Patrick's School in Woodstock participated in a "litterless lunch" day. Students were encouraged to use re-usable containers, compost fruit and vegetable waste and reduce the amount of their own personal waste. On a typical day at St. Pat's,  4-5 large garbage bags are filled with garbage. On Earth Day, St. Pat's reduced its waste to 1 garbage bag, 1 large compost bag and 2 bags of recycling.

The photos above show the students at the beginning of the day with empty containers and then at the end of the day with their recycling containers. The three male students hold the composted material and stand behind the total waste for the day.

St. Vincent de Paul celebrates Emerald Status! During the school's Earth Day Celebration, Principal. Carabott-Lee proudly accepted the Emerald Status crest on behalf of all students and staff of SVDP for completing 500 environmental projects. The goal is: to complete 1000 projects and become the two-hundred-and-sixty-second Earth School in Canada.

Students at St. Anthony’s French Immersion School are making a difference. They joined with teachers, parents and members of Reforest London to plant trees in their playground  to mark Earth Day. School Council donated a thousand dollars towards the project, a sum that was matched by Reforest London. It paid for the trees and shrubs that will beautify the playground. Above, JK students from Mme. Miller’s Class took part in the planting.

St. George's Eco Team held an Earth Day "Book Swap" in the library, to promote reading and recycling. Students in all grades were asked to bring in some gently used books to exchange for an another (to a maximum of five). A big thank-you to Mrs. Zabehaylo and the Eco Team for a job well done.
The Earth Day celebration at St. Jude Catholic Elementary School in London was led by the Eco Team. (Above)  One of the students, Michael, even wrote a song and sang it with the group as part of the presentation.
