Earth Day 2010
Students Prepare to Make a
Difference
This Thursday - April 22nd - is Earth
Day, a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for
the Earth's environment. Students at each of our schools will be
doing their part to help promote environmental protection and to
raise awareness. Follow them Live on the LDCSB website
all day Thursday, as we highlight Earth Day projects throughout the
day.
The End of an Era
This week marked the run of St. Mary Choir
School's production "Beauty and the Beast Jr." This
presentation by the Grade. 8 students was nothing short of
magical! It also marked the last choir school production
for Don Fleckser, who has had a longstanding relationship with
the choir school having directed 25 productions over the past 40
year history of the school. Don has just recently been named
recipient of the Maggie Bassett award. This award is presented
annually by Theatre Ontario to an individual who, over a number of
years, has made a sustained and significant contribution to the
development of theatre in Ontario.
In his nomination for the Maggie Bassett
Award, Mr. Fleckser was described as "a tireless champion for
the advancement of community theatre productions in London and
surrounding regions, whose name has always been synonymous with
excellence in educational drama and in children's theatre
productions." He produced countless musical productions with
our students, to the delight and wonder of thousands of school
children and adult audiences from far and wide.
"It only takes a stroll down our hallway, past the posters, the
cast photos and historic "Wall of Fame" for any visitor to
know that Don Fleckser's presence was and is imbedded in the choir
school's history," said former Principal Kathleen Fraumeni, who
worked with Don Fleckser on many of those productions. "Year
after year, show after show, from the mid 1970s to present day, his
stamp has been imprinted on the lives of the graduating students,
having introduced them to the great Broadway musicals of all time
and some of the most beautifully staged productions with children
that any Canadian audience could hope to enjoy. "
On
February 1 the new Keeping Our Kids Safe at School Act (Bill
157) came into force. This legislation supports the London District
Catholic School Board's belief that all members of our school
community - staff, students, parents, and community agencies - have
a role to play in making our schools a safe place in which to learn.
