Bishop Ronald Fabbro brought a message of
compassion and chastity to LDCSB students this week, who were
attending a youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Conference Day at the Catholic
Education Centre. December 1st is recognized as World AIDS DAY and
students from all eight of our Catholic Secondary schools were
in the audience. Bishop Fabbro spoke about our response to sufferers
of AIDS and our own need to make life-giving choices.
"The church teaches our response to
this crisis must be one of compassion," he said, pointing out
that 25% of the total worldwide care for AIDS sufferers is through
Catholic aid organizations. The bishop said the church is very much
aware of the pressures in a society which treats casual sex on a par
with sex within a marriage. He said the church stresses that abstinence
is a much better approach than so-called 'safe sex.' The Bishop also
spoke out against the discrimination that occurs in many part of the
world against those afflicted with AIDS.
The theme for World AIDS Day 2009 is
'Universal Access and Human Rights'- for example the Right to Live.
Four agencies also presented information to our students: the
Aids Committee of London; the Infectious Diseases Care program at
St. Joseph's Health Care; the Public Health Units; and "The
Right To Play". There were also many displays Which offered
information on the impact of HIV and AIDS.
