Lights Out for the
Good of the Planet
Earth Hour is a Chance
to Support Conservation
Lights will be shut off all across the planet
tomorrow for the annual observance of Earth
Hour - a phenomenon that has been growing in support every year.
This event encourages people from around the world to turn off all
non-essential lights and electronic devices for one hour (8:30-9:30
pm). Last year hundreds of Ontario schools across the province took
part in Earth Hour, with students joining more than 10 million
Canadians in switching off their lights for one hour or for the
entire day. Switching off lights is a simple action - but one that
both helps make a difference and sends a powerful message that we
care about the environment.
This
is a wonderful opportunity for us and for our families to
demonstrate our commitment to environmental education. Turn
off the lights, but turn on young minds. Please make sure
before leaving work on Friday, March 26 that all computers,
printers, radios, adapters, lights and any other electronic
devices are turned off.

Students and staff at St. Michael Catholic
Elementary School got a jump on Earth Hour, with an observance of
their own today. (Above) All students were encouraged to come
to school wearing green to show their support. As well, the school
turned off all of the lights and computers, and participating
in a school wide “litter-less” lunch. A note home to parents
asked them to consider joining the Earth Hour observance on Saturday
evening from 8:30-9:30 p.m.
St. Vincent de Paul celebrated Earth Hour by
turning off all unnecessary lights and computers from 1:00-2:30pm.

Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School had a
special visitor today, Board Chair Bill Hall, who helped Mrs.
Russell's Grade 2/3 class celebrate Earth Hour.
On
February 1 the new Keeping Our Kids Safe at School Act (Bill
157) came into force. This legislation supports the London District
Catholic School Board's belief that all members of our school
community - staff, students, parents, and community agencies - have
a role to play in making our schools a safe place in which to learn.

safe and what parents should know. Click on the Bulletin Board

Schools across the LDCSB
have been busy collecting money to help the earthquake victims in
Haiti. To date they have raised more than 60-thousand dollars
and the total continues to climb. If you want to help,
donations are being
collected by a number of relief agencies, including the Red Cross
and the Catholic charities:

Celebrating Those
Who Have Made a Difference!
Consider nominating a colleague or a friend or someone you admire -
someone who HAS made a positive difference.
This will be the seventh year of an
initiative to profile London District Catholic School Board
Graduates who live the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. Those
selected must be secondary school graduates of the London District
Catholic School Board or its predecessor Boards.
THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE BOARD EMPLOYEES, PAST OR PRESENT.
They must
demonstrate impact in professional and/or personal life in the
following areas: spiritual, academic, aesthetic, social, or
physical; demonstrate fulfillment of the Ontario Catholic Graduate
Expectations; and demonstrate stewardship in Catholic Education.
Nominators must complete a nomination form, signed by the nominee
and submitted to John Boles at the Catholic Education Centre by March
30th, 2010. (Printable nominations forms are available HERE).
There is a limit of one nomination per
nominator. A Selection Committee will review all nominations and
make a final decision based on the criteria. The graduate (s) will
be profiled in Spotlight, on the Board Website and during Education
Week. This is your opportunity to publicly honour someone you know
who has made a difference in the world around them!
