Back From Haiti
St. Michael Students Forge a
Special Bond
The proof of the good things
our schools are doing to help the people of Haiti can be found at a
Haitian orphanage and all of the St. Michael Flames T-shirts that
are proudly worn there. Above, children at Coram Deo Orphanage
in Port-au-Prince, Haiti are wearing T-shirts from St. Michael
Catholic School in London at the facility's gates. The
school community sent some shirts to Haiti with a parent of a young
boy from the school who was adopted through this
orphanage.
As a school community, St. Michael decided to focus fundraising
efforts to support this facility and the woman who runs the
orphanage who is from London. All money collected was directed to
“Coram Deo," a missionary group supported by Mission of Tears, a
charitable organization out of Toronto. The local connection is
through Karen Bultjen, a Londoner who heads Coram Deo which is
supplying medical assistance, food, shelter and support for those in
need. The Coram Deo residence is located in the heart of
Port-au-Prince (capital city of Haiti), one of the heaviest hit
areas in the country.
St. Michael raised more than 14-hundred dollars for the
orphanage through a program they call "Helping Hands for
Haiti." Over a period of two weeks, the
Student Parliament sold symbolic “hands”for a dollar each
to support the relief effort. The goal was to post enough hands in
the gymnasium to reach around the gym from Canada to
Haiti. Principal Sean Gregory calls it a good news story indeed
and one that has shown the students how they can help.

On
February 1 the new Keeping Our Kids Safe at School Act (Bill
157) came into force. This legislation supports the London District
Catholic School Board's belief that all members of our school
community - staff, students, parents, and community agencies - have
a role to play in making our schools a safe place in which to learn.
Find out what's being done to keep our kids
safe and what parents should know. Click on the Bulletin Board

Schools across the LDCSB
have been busy collecting money to help the earthquake victims in
Haiti. To date they have raised more than 60-thousand dollars
and the total continues to climb. If you want to help,
donations are being
collected by a number of relief agencies, including the Red Cross
and the Catholic charities:
