RMC Debaters Make Their Point

March 6th, 2009

The 20 member delegation of RMC's United Nations Debate Team recently attended the University of Western Ontario's 2009 Model United Nations Conference. Present at the debate were 9 schools from over 4 different school boards. Debates went from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There were lively exchanges throughout the debates as delegates from the schools made points and counterpoints regarding the world's current issues. Western's panel of judges awarded Luke McNiece of RMC the Gavel, the highest award granted at a UN debate conference, and awarded to one student in the Security Council. Luke debated Military intervention in Darfur, the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, and Russian aggression against Poland and Ukraine. RMC's delegates also received the recognition of debate excellence for their debates on Multinational corporations, finance restructuring and child soldiers. Students were provided with many opportunities including enhancing public speaking and debating skills while developing knowledge of current affairs. As well, participants learned parliamentary debate procedure."
