Clare Robinson, who has dedicated her teaching
career to helping students with special needs, is one of two 2008 inductees
to the Teachers' Wall of Fame. She was selected by a panel of
educators and community members from a list of nominees and was nominated
by a former student. Clare Robinson has spent her entire teaching
career of over 35 years with the London District Catholic School
Board and its predecessor board in both elementary and secondary schools, most recently at
Catholic Central High School where she is in the Learning Services
department, supporting and assisting students with special needs.
In her acceptance speech, she said she is
gratified that she has had a career that is so connected with
her faith. She said she remembers her teachers with affection and
respect and hopes she has brought honour to their name. Her students
teach her something new every day and she says she knows
what a privilege it is to be companion on their journey.
"The students are indeed the salt of the earth and the light of
the world."
A graduate of London Teachers' College,
Clare earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Western
Ontario and a Masters Degree from OISE at the University of Toronto,
with a focus special education. A former student who met Clare in an
ESL class and who spoke no English describes her first meeting
"with this wonderful, gentle woman." "She smiled with
such warmth and spoke to us as though we understood." Clare
Robinson encourages her students to believe in themselves and to
know that every contribution matters; every kindness counts.
Described as "a teacher who knows how
to teach her students by getting to know them and being genuinely
interested in their growth as human beings," Clare Robinson is
also a committed member of her community. She was honoured by the
London Police in 2002 and, in 2006, she was included on the Mayor's Honours
List for her outstanding contribution to safety and crime
prevention in the City of London.
I will remember today forever and accept
this award with gratitude and humility, " she said.
The Teachers' Wall of Fame was
started in 2004 and is on display at the Central branch of the
London Public Library. It is jointly supported by the Library and
the Faculty of Education. (Below, Superintendent of Education
