The fourth annual Family Literacy Conference
was another great success! The conference was held last Saturday at
John Paul II Catholic Secondary School. This year, the conference
was renamed in memory of Karen Dean (a former educator in the LDCSB)
who worked tirelessly, as a planning committee member, to make this
annual conference such a wonderful experience for families from
around our district. Karen did an enormous amount of scheduling
work, behind the scenes, to ensure that all families were able to
attend workshops that were their top choices. Thus, the event is now
called the Karen Dean Memorial Family Literacy Conference.
At this year's conference there were about
260 parents and children in attendance. Each family participated in
three of 17 different workshops throughout the morning. Workshop
themes included writing family story books, dancing, creating
plasticine art, safe Internet surfing, family games, the magic of
science, Jazzercise, media and me, scrapbooking, and creating
digital slide shows.
The opening liturgy addressed the wonders of God's creation and our
many gifts given to us by God. It set the tone for a wonderful day
of fun and learning! Pizza and door prizes were also enjoyed by all!
Chris Quinn, conference
chair, would like to take the opportunity to thank all members of
the planning committee, student volunteers, our host school staff,
vendor supports, other Board personnel, and the many families who
supported and/or participated in this celebration of literacy
learning.
