Most Board Test Results Exceed Provincial Averages

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessment results are out this week and they paint a positive picture for the LDCSB. The Board’s 2007-08 results meet or exceed provincial results in six of the eight subject categories (i.e., Grades 3 and Grade 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics and Grade 9 Mathematics - Academic and Applied Courses) released by the EQAO.

In relation to our 2006-2007 Board EQAO primary division assessment results, the percentage of students who attained the provincial standard or higher increased 4 percentage points for Grade 3 Reading (from 59% to 63%); increased 1 percentage point for Grade 3 Writing (from 62% to 63%) and increased 1 percentage point for Grade 3 Mathematics (from 69% to 70%).  In comparison to the province, we are above the provincial average in Grade 3 Reading by 2 percentage points, below the provincial average in Grade 3 Writing by 3 percentage points and above the province in Grade 3 Mathematics by 2 percentage points. In relation to the 2006-2007 provincial results, the province decreased by 1 percentage point in Grade 3 Reading (from 62% to 61%); increased by 2 percentage points in Grade 3 Writing (from 64% to 66%); and decreased by 1 percentage point in Grade 3 Mathematics (from 69% to 68%).

With respect to the junior division, the percentage of students who attained the provincial standard or higher increased 5 percentage points for Grade 6 Reading (from 67% to 72%); increased 4 percentage points for Grade 6 Writing (from 62% to 66%) and increased 2 percentage points for Grade 6 Mathematics (from 61% to 63%). Relative to the province, we are 6 percentage points above provincial average in Grade 6 Reading, 1 percentage point below the provincial average in Grade 6 Writing and 2 percentage points above the provincial average in Grade 6 Mathematics. In relation to the 2006-2007 provincial results, the province increased 2 percentage points (from 64% to 66%) in Grade 6 Reading; increased 6 percentage points (from 61% to 67%) in Grade 6 Writing; and increased 2 percentage points (from 59% to 61%) in Grade 6 Mathematics.
In comparison to our 2006-2007 Board EQAO Grade 9 Math achievement results, the percentage of students who attained the provincial standard or higher increased 4 percentage points (from 75% to 79%) for students enrolled in the Academic Math program; and decreased 4 percentage points (from 47% to 43%) for students enrolled in the Applied Math program. In relation to the province, we are above the provincial average by 4 percentage points for Grade 9 Academic Mathematics and for Grade 9 Applied Mathematics we are 9 percentage points above the provincial average. In relation to the 2006-2007 provincial results, the province increased 4 percentage points (from 71% to 75%) in Grade 9 Academic Mathematics and decreased 1 percentage point (from 35% to 34%) in Grade 9 Applied Mathematics.
As previously noted the results from the EQAO assessments represent a snapshot in time of student performance. These results, however, in conjunction with other school and classroom assessment data helps inform improvement-planning efforts towards improving student learning and achievement.
