Pillowcases galore! During the season of lent, Mrs. Marino’s Fashion class (HNC30/HNB40) were looking for ideas about how to contribute their new sewing skills within the community. They came across a newspaper article about a group of ladies in Chatham who recently started sewing pillowcases for children in long-term care at LHSC and also in Windsor. After a few phone calls, the CCH Fashion class joined forces with the Pillowcase Ladies of Chatham to create bright and colourful pillowcases for children between the ages of 2 and 18.

On Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 the Pillowcase Ladies made a visit to CCH to share their stories and pictures with the Fashion class. In total the students created 31 pillowcases for donation to the ConKerr Cancer organization!!! These pillowcases will help to brighten the spirits of sick kids and their hospital rooms. We look forward to continuing these efforts in the years ahead!

So wish the boys luck if you see them.

In another competition, the Chamber Choir won Provincials and the boys placed 4th. So now Chamber is moved on to Nationals. So wish them luck too. Great things happening with this talented group.

Our final concert is next Wednesday at CCH. Our CD with all of our repertoire this year will be for sale and great energetic music to share.

In previous years the school would collect the milk bags and send them to a group who makes the mats. Staff and students will have completed 13 mats which will be shipped to South Africa. The process starts in our School to Community classroom where the students and staff flatten the milk bags. Then they are cut by students, linked together for easy weaving, and finally woven to make a gorgeous mat. The students not only gain volunteer hours but the self-satisfaction of helping to keep the milk bags out of the landfills and providing those in need an opportunity to sleep on something other than the ground.

King’s student Dominique McKee is geared up for an educational and experiential summer abroad. Now that she’s completed her third-year in Psychology and Philosophy, McKee is taking off on Thursday, May 2 to spend three months in Lviv, Ukraine. She will be a participant in an Intercordia Canada experiential learning trip.
Offered through Social Justice and Peace Studies, King’s Intercordia preparation course gave McKee a chance to research life in Ukraine prior to her departure. McKee will be residing with a Ukrainian family and interacting with local communities as she learns about the services offered at L’Arche-Kovcheh Community, an international network of communities for people with development disabilities.
"It is a truly dignifying feature of King's that we offer these programs, especially with our emphasis on Catholic living and the unique availability of our Social Justice and Peace Studies program, which means so much to the students here," says McKee. "By offering experiential learning opportunities King's demonstrates that they value the wholisitc growth of their students.
Once McKee arrives in Lviv, she will choose between five arts and crafts workshops hosted at L’Arche: “Busy Bees”, “Dreamers”, “Znesinnia”, “Nazareth” and “Smiles”. These workshops connect individuals with developmental disabilities with young assistants and volunteers as they develop creative gifts, cultivate a sense of their own worth and recognize the value of their lives.
This experiential learning trip allows McKee to apply what she’s learned in the classroom and understand the impact of community support for those living with disabilities. One way McKee plans to share her Ukrainian experience is to blog about her daily activities and the valuable lessons she takes away from engaging with those in the community. She hopes to promote the Intercordia Canada program to other university students and highlight the incredible work done at L’Arche.
McKee was inspired to take part in this program after a meeting last summer with the founder of L’Arche and co-founder of Intercordia Canada, Jean Vanier.
“Vanier is such an inspirational person that he made me want to get involved right away. He has done so much good work to improve community living for people living with disabilities. I’m definitely looking forward to the day-to-day activities and building relationships with those in the communities. It’s about ‘being with’ instead of ‘working for’ which really appeals to me,” explains McKee.
Founded in 2000 by Vanier and Gilles La Cardinale, Intercordia Canada is a non-profit organization that partners with Canadian universities in order to offer students a unique, university accredited, engaged-learning experience. The goal of this innovative learning program is to encourage moral responsiveness, develop respect for diversity and a valuing of other cultures, religions and socio-economic backgrounds that will enable Canadian students to attain a well-educated solidarity with others who are different.

CCH is a top fundraising school in the city. We have raised over $100,000 over the last 12 years for breast cancer research and we won the Run for the Cure London School Challenge Award for the school raising the most money for 12 years in a row. All Crusaders are very proud of that achievment and to have helped the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation move towards the cure for breast cancer.

Now we are turning our efforts in the direction of ovarian cancer. The London Run for Ovarian Cancer organization is thrilled to have CCH join in their efforts to raise money for a team of doctors, the Translational Ovarian Cancer Research Group at London Health Science Center, who are doing cutting edge research in the early detection of ovarian cancer.

How can you help? Easy. You can either join our team or sponsor our team. If you want to join our team and are a student, you need to go to the CCH library. As a special arrangement with the Run organization, the usual $25 registration fee has been waived for our team members with the promise that each member will raise at least $60 but it all has to be managed on paper, not online, so you need to visit the library to join up. So, students, do not register online or you will be required to pay that charge. Come to the library and pick up the form, collect at least $60 in donations to be on the team, and help us raise money for this great cause. There will be a great prize for the top student fundraiser! Parents, if you want to join our team you can call the library at 519-675-4431 ext 21071 and I would be happy to make sure you also get the registration/donation form. If you want to sponsor our team, you could sponsor a member (your child or their friend) or go to the official website: www.runforovariancancer.ca and search under Teams for CCH Crusaders and make an online team donation. We thank you for your support.

It was a full day and a rewarding one for more than 150 of our Grade ten students who took part in a Justice Symposium Thursday at Brescia College - a day of exploration and celebration of the rich gift of Catholic social teaching. Catholic social teaching is at the core of our faith. This core teaching is rooted in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, and manifested by the life of Jesus. As Christians, followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to celebrate the dignity of each person, to show a preferential love to those who lives are affected by poverty and those who are oppressed. We are called to be responsible citizens who give witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life (Catholic Graduate Expectation).

The Symposium was a joint project, involving the London District Catholic School Board, the Diocese of London Outreach Ministries and the Institute for Catholic Formation, with support from Brescia College, the Sisters of Saint Joseph and Development and Peace. Presenters included: Dan Moynihan: Youth Ministry Specialist for the Diocese of London; Kaitlin Van Herk: Student Assistant Youth Ministry Outreach; Richard Corneil: Executive Director of the Institute for Catholic Formation at St. Peter’s Seminary; Joe Bezzina: Coordinator of Curriculum – Religion and Family Life; Dan Keane: Religion Teacher – St. Thomas Aquinas; Kyle Geraghty: Science Teacher and Lifeteen Band Leader; Lisa Moynihan: Religion Teacher – Catholic Central; Alex Lepore: Campus Minister – King’s University College; Allyson Larkin: Lecturer – King’s University College; and Katie Mustachi: Student – King’s University College. The day also included an hour outside in the cold and snow as part of a team-building exercise.

It may not have looked like winter outside however, on Wednesday, January 16th Mrs. Marino’s Living and Working with Children class hosted a Winter Wonderland themed morning at CCH. Our guests of honour were kindergarten teachers and students from one of our LDCSB schools.
The students transformed their classroom into a cheerful winter scene with a variety of centres for the kindergarteners to explore. The centres included snowman crafts, matching games, animal exploration, snowflake decorating, winter pattern designing, homemade playdoh, and painting winter tree scenes. The students also prepared a healthy snack for their visitors to enjoy while they listened to stories. There were lots of smiling faces as well during the singing and dancing of the “Snowky Poky”.
As a special treat the students were also invited to Mr. William’s grade nine Instrumental Music class. The music students demonstrated each of their instruments to our young visitors and then put on a wonderful performance. The young guests enjoyed the show and asked many interesting questions about the instruments. Many thanks go out to Mr. William and his talented class for helping to make the morning extra special for our little guests!
Congratulations to all the CCH students for organizing and running another very successful event at CCH!!

George Johnson has the horses to play both football and basketball for the Western Mustangs
Brent Boles, Special to The Free Press

At the end of football season, George Johnson took off his helmet, stepped off the gridiron and stepped onto the hardwood. Johnson, 19, is a rare two-sport varsity athlete. He suits up as a wide receiver for the Western Mustangs football team and plays point guard on the school’s basketball team.
“I’ve been here since 1991. . . and I think, including George, we’ve had two,” basketball coach Brad Campbell said. “It’s extremely rare.” Campbell said athletes today are so highly specialized, few have the ability to perform at a high level in more than one sport. But Johnson is the exception. He saw playing time on the highly ranked football squad, a rarity for a freshman. When he was recruited, football coach Greg Marshall said he might be the best incoming wide receiver in the province. “He’s a natural athlete,” Marshall said. “You can tell he’s played basketball because he positions his body really well.”
Since joining the basketball team in November, Johnson’s started in almost half of the games. “He can really be an elite defender in our league,” Campbell said. “He’s going to be an outstanding two-way player. Offensively he can penetrate and shoot the three.” But balancing both sports hasn’t come without challenges. Basketball season started in August, but Johnson wasn’t able to join the team until football finished in November. Now, he’s missing offseason football work during basketball season. It’s a sacrifice both coaches have been willing to make to help Johnson develop. “There has to be some give and take,” Marshall said.
Johnson believes that despite the challenges, the sports have benefitted each other. “I came in (to basketball) a lot stronger than I was before so that helped a lot with my defence,” he said. Both Campbell and Marshall agree balancing school and two sports could be one of the greatest challenges. “You don’t have any breaks in there where you can get caught up,” Marshall said.
Johnson has been paired with Randy McCauley — a fellow Catholic Central grad and former two-sport track and football athlete at Western— to mentor him and help him manage his work. “They offered so much help that if I managed my time, I was alright,” said Johnson, who regularly attends study sessions with the basketball team. Both on the court and off it, balancing the load will take a great deal of work. Fortunately for Johnson, that’s another attribute his coaches praise. “His work ethic is great,” Marshall said.

The students enjoyed their experience at UOttawa which included a campus tour, a session of laughing yoga and a wonderful sit-down lunch. Not only are there outstanding 12 foot lit trees that reflect in the polished floor, festive urns, and a pair of angels to look after us, but the all important Nativity is nestled between two lovely trees lit in Crusader blue. It is a welcoming spot for students, staff, and visitors.
