How will the anticpated Ontario Science Curriculum (Grade 1 - Grade 8) impact environmental education?

A page outlining draft expectations for 2007-2008 and beyond, has been posted here:

What types of paper is recyclable?

Any uncontaminated paper can be recycled. Newsprint, cover stock, and even the wrappings from Xerox paper can be collected along with coloured paper. The only exceptions are carbon paper, and waxed paper which cannot be recycled. (At one time, Xerox paper was wrapped with a plastic coating that was unsuitable for recycling.)

What types of food containers are recyclable?

All food containers are suitable for recycling as long as they are not contaminated by food. (I.e., cheese stuck inside of pizza boxes can contaminate an entire bag of recycled material, making it unusable.)

How do I organize our school's recycling?

All paper goes through the recycling process as 'coloured paper'. There is no need to sort paper.

Glass, tin and plastic materials should be sorted into separate containers for pick-up.

There are numerous resources available to support you in your venture. Via the Web you might like to start here:http://www.yougrowgirl.com/garden/vermicomposting.php

If you prefer to start with text resources, the friendliest resource available is "Worms Eat My Garbage" by Mary Appelhof.

Where can I get 'meal worms' for my class?

You can get meal worms at any well-stocked pet store. In requesting quotes from
London region pet stores
, I found the following 'meal' deals:

Super Pet (681-6300)
small meal worms (about 2 cm long) go for $0.50/12 or $3.69/100
jumbo meal worms (about 4 cm long and plump) go for $1.49/dozen or $8.49/100

Pet Value (686-3561)
regular size meal worms are available on order for $0.06 per mealworm

PetSmart (672-6149)
small meal worms are $2.89 per box (approximately 30 meal worms).
jumbo meal worms are $4.49 per box (approximately 30 meal worms)

Talk about an authentic math problem!

What do I do with used toner cartridges and old colour ink cartridges from my printer?

These materials are recyclable. If you are unsure of a local organization that makes use of these items, you can seal cartridges in plastic bags, and forward them to any of the following schools:

Monsignor O'Neil Catholic School, Tilsonburg (to the attention of Fred Fowlie)
Sacred Heart Catholic School, ParkHill (to the attention of Andre Lisowyk)
