Taking on Roles

When deciding on roles for group members.....

  • It is likely that your teacher will have help in finalizing the teams/groups for this rich performance task. As in the real world, you don't always get to decide who you work with!
  • Before deciding on what role each person will play, it would be advantageous to find out about the specific responsibilities that accompany each role.
  • As you take on a role, do some background research to see if the 'job' you've taken on exists in the real world. Who knows, maybe you'll find path to a future career!
  • Try to ensure that each member of the team is assigned a role that suits their abilities and interests. If you are having difficulty with the task of assigning roles within the group, your teacher might be able to provide some guidance.
  • Remember that team members can and should assist one another in the completion of tasks.
  • Even though each person has a unique role to play, the group may benefit from the selection of a 'group leader' who ensures that all of the tasks get accomplished in the time provided.
  • Your teacher will be assessing your work on this project throughout the task. The process is as important as the product!
  • At the conclusion of this task, you may be called upon to complete an individual or group self-assessment. It will be much more gratifying to complete these forms if all group members contribute with their best efforts.
  • In presenting your 'final project', each group member is responsible for knowing about all aspects of the project. Your teacher may elect to have each individual present the project separately; or following a group presentation, he/she may have specific questions for each member of your team.
