CONFEDERATION SUMMATIVE TASK:
I’ve received a telegraph message across
the new Atlantic cable from the Duke of Newcastle, my first employer.
He suggests that this grand celebration of Confederation would be the
perfect time to complete the photographic journal I began way back in
1860 on the Royal Tour.

HOW:
- Review the tasks you completed in Snapshot of Canada I, II, and III.
Use the Album Planner to organize your
final product.
- You will need to compose a 100-word introductory paragraph to insert
in the album. Don’t forget to date your letter and address it
to “Your Grace”, as it will be read by the Duke of Newcastle.
You can handwrite the letter OR format it in “typewriter”
font -- the
typewriter had JUST been invented in 1867!
- Albums from this time period were usually made of stiff black or
cream paper -- construction paper would be an excellent material. Photographs
were sometimes glued directly to the pages, but were often inserted
in “mounting corners”. Use the phrase “vintage
photograph album” to search for examples.
- You MUST include at least one image for each topic listed in the
table of the Album Planner.
- Each entry in the album should have a clear caption, date, and source
noted.
- Your completed album should contain a minimum of 10 images -- these
can be sketches, maps, artifacts, or photographs.
- Consult the Album Rubric for this
assignment before submitting your work.
Then End for You A New Beginning for Will
When I arrive back in Toronto with my completed
Dominion Day reports, I will sit down with my editor George Brown. I show
Brown the completed photographic album before shipping it off to the Duke.
What do you think Brown’s reaction might
be?
Mr. Brown has interesting news for me. He’s heard of a new newspaper
staring up in West Middlesex county. He knows that I really like the area
and suggests that I apply for the managing editor position.
I think that this would be a great opportunity:
it’s time I put down roots in my adopted country. Canada and I will
mature together. Strathroy – here I come!!
