Student Activity #2: Royal Tour Map
I have decided to assemble a map of the colonies visited by the
Prince of Wales in 1860 (see p. 9 in Canada:
A Story of a Developing Nation for an overview map). I feel
that this will help me to recall important details and organize my impressions
for my Royal Tour album. I know that cartographers have already drawn
several maps of British North America (see http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/nmc/n141864k.jpg)
but I want to focus on other aspects not always included in these maps.
I’m really getting interested in Canada, so I’ve decided
to include Rupert’s Land, British Columbia, and the North-West Territories,
even though the tour won’t visit those areas.
Your task: Provide Will with the various maps and data
he will need to compile his overall map. See (http://www.geography.about.com/)
for an outline map of a specific colony or territory. Your map should
include:
- major settlements and geographical features
- population data in graph form (see p. 6 of in Canada: A Story of
a Developing Nation
- symbols representing three major industries or exports
- illustration (drawn or inserted) with caption, depicting an important
social aspect of the area
- graphic symbolizing whether any railways had yet been constructed
in the colony or territory http://imagescn.technomuses.ca/photoessays/railways/railways06.ctm
Remember: your graphic and statistical information
MUST be from the correct time frame -- around 1860.
