The
1860s were a significant time for our nation. The decade opened with
the first official Royal Tour to Canada – the visit of Albert
Edward, Prince of Wales.
By the end of the decade, Canada’s social, political, and economic
landscapes would have been dramatically changed.
Let’s step back in time and get a “snapshot”
of British North America in the1860s. |

Hello, I’m
Will Thayer and I’m one of the Prince of Wales’
footmen. You’re probably what a footman is! I’m
responsible for lots of jobs around the Prince’s household
– both indoors and out. Sometimes, I set the table for
formal meals, then help serve them. I might be on “door”
duty, gathering coats and hats as people arrive. My favourite
job is riding on the back of the Prince’s carriage.
Very often, I’m asked to deliver notes and letters around
the city and I get out to see the sights.
My mom is a seamstress and my dad is a toolmaker. My mom taught
me how to read and write and my dad has passed along his love
of gadgets. Just before we left on this tour, my parents gave
me a portable camera. Hardly anyone has ever seen this type
of camera and I’m really excited about using it on the
tour.

Just before we left England, I was called
into the office of the Duke of Newcastle. I was a little nervous,
because the Duke is the Colonial Secretary and Prince Albert Edward’s
chaperone. The Duke has asked me to record my impressions of Canada
in a photo album, with accompanying notes.
YOUR TASK: You will need to “help”
Will with his photo album project by:
- keeping a series of notes
- selecting images from various events and locations
- summarizing Will’s observations in either a digital or
hard-copy album
