Current
State of Affairs
POSITIVE
• With technological developments (computers, digital technology)
many advancements have been made in accessibility of the arts
- virtual art galleries, downloading of music, music software,
allowing for a renaissance in the arts
• The internet has allowed for instant communication and
therefore faster access to performance events, and inhome entertainment
NEGATIVE
• With so much access to the arts through downloading and
instant availability, artists are being robbed of royalties and
revenue
• The digital revolution takes away from true art forms
- too many special effects, leaving no true creativity
• With so much available on a world wide scale, ethnic identities
are being lost to a global identity
• Rising cost of live entertainment due to industry greed
of artists, makes arts events available only to those with financial
means.
INTERESTING
• Despite advances in technology, live musicians/artists
are still creating
• People still enjoy attending theaters, concert halls and
movie theaters
to have the “live” experience
• Theaters, opera halls, art galleries still being built
• Arts are underfunded by national governments and subsequently,
education systems
• Arts are a multibillion-dollar industry in most cities
• Technology allows for more people than ever to access
the arts
Blasts
from the Past
• Over the past 100 years, the world has seen an evolution
in the world of entertainment, from live theater to silent movies,
radio plays, movies with sound, talkies and black and white to
Technicolor movies and motion pictures, home movies on VHS and
DVD, and the invention of the computer and internet
• From the live salon concert accessed by a small middle
to upper class in the 1800’s, music is now accessible to
the masses - from early technology of wax cylinders, to 78’s
to LP in mono, to stereo LP, to cassette tape, and the CD, music
is now readily available on DVD’s and MP3’s
• Where once people had to attend an arts event to be part
of the experience, with the development of TV in the 1950’s
people could access events from the comfort of their own home.
The Ed Sullivan show popularized such groups as the Beatles, the
Rolling Stones and The Mamas and The Papas - Mass Media was started
• With immigration from around the world, the North American
population became culturally diverse. The creativity of these
people has seen the development of the art from of Jazz, Musical
Theater, Modern Dance, Visual Arts, Motion Pictures, and Architecture
Future
World
1. Glenn Gould, over 30 years ago, predicted that the live performance
of music would disappear and be replaced by the wonders of studio
recording.
Do you think with the developments in technology
that all music will be computer generated, musicians will ultimately
be obsolete and that live entertainment will cease to exist and
solely be created in the studio or movie set?
2. As life expectancy increases and mobility decreases, accessibility
to stimulation needs to be maintained.
Will the way of the future be to experience
the arts in the comfort of the home?
3. Technology is part and parcel of Arts. It is what is driving
modern development.
How reliant will arts be on technology in
the future?
In a world that increasingly is globally oriented, how can we maintain
our cultural identity in the Arts?
