The Rights and Responsibilities described below apply to all members of the St. Mary School community. By striving to live up to these expectations, we can all play an important role in making St. Mary School a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

We have the right to be respected for who we are.

We have the responsibility to show respect and be tolerant of our differences.

This means that we must treat others the way that we would like to be treated: accepting and celebrating our differences.

We have the right to experience a variety of learning opportunities.

We have the responsibility to participate in a committed, loving way putting forth our best effort.

This means that we will strive to develop good work habits and work to fulfill our potential and maintain the best possible standards. It means that we have a right to a classroom environment that fosters and facilitates learning.

We have the right to be safe in the classroom, on the playground and on the bus.

We have the responsibility to follow the rules of safety.

This means that we will not tolerate physical, emotional or psychological violence toward any member of the St. Mary School community. It means that we will interact in a cooperative way and work to solve our problems and to act as peacemakers.

We have the right to express our ideas and to be heard.

We have the responsibility to speak appropriately and to listen actively and openly.

This means that we must speak and listen in a positive and non-threatening manner without interruption, punishment or ridicule.

We have the right to learn with appropriate materials in a clean, comfortable environment.

We have the responsibility to treat school property and materials with respect.

This means that we will take pride in the appearance of our school, classrooms, musical instruments, materials and ourselves. We will keep our school free of vandalism.

We have the right to enjoy a clean, safe environment.

We have the responsibility to play safely and follow the rules of safe and fair play.

This means that we will keep our school yard and community free of litter. It means that we will practice the three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We will follow the rules of safe and fair play.

We have the right to be happy and to feel good about ourselves.

We have the responsibility to create an inviting and welcoming community.
|

This means that everyone at St. Mary School will be treated fairly regardless of characteristics such as appearance, ability, culture, gender or language.
