Author Visits at Our Lady of Lourdes Library & Resource Centre

We are so very fortunate to enjoy the company of some wonderful authors for young people! Read more about upcoming visits, and reports on past presentations.

Many thanks to the amazing authors who have shared their experiences with us!

UPDATE:
KARI-LYNN WINTERS TO VISIT WITH PRIMARY STUDENTS IN MAY!

2008 Blue Spruce nominee Kari-Lynn Winters (Jeffrey and Sloth) will be visiting our school during Canadian Children's Book Week to share her love of writing -- and reading -- with our Primary students. More details to follow, but if you'd like to learn more about this awesome Canadian picture book author, be sure to check out her web site: http://kariwinters.com/

Eric Walters Engages Students
with an Enthusiastic Presentation!

On April 8, our students in Grades 4 to 8 were fortunate to hear Eric Walters talk about his books, his thoughts, and his reflections on the writing process. He really showed us what it means to persevere in the face of rejection in everything we do, whether we become writers or have other goals to achieve. The students were a captivated audience and the feedback was very positive. Most students came away with a newfound appreciation for the books that sit on the library shelves, and the writers who create them. Many students continue to check out Eric's books, and will continue to do so as more great stories get published by this amazing author. Thanks, Eric!

We Love Elliot -- And Andrea Beck!

Click on the photo above to access the Slideshow

It was a blizzard out there, but Andrea Beck braved the weather and arrived at our school for her special visit with our Primary Division on Thursday, November 20. We had a great time learning about how Andrea used her imagination as a child, and many of us had a chance to volunteer in her demonstration of how a book is born from imagination to finished product.

Andrea even took some time to show us how to draw Elliot Moose! It was amazing how she started out with a bunch of roughly-drawn shapes and transformed these odd-looking blobs into Elliot! She even left us a wonderful drawing of Elliot to hang in the library, so we will always remember her visit. Thanks, Andrea, for inspiring a new generation of writers and illustrators!

Mike Wade Wows the Crowd at OLOL!

Who knew that the tall, bald man who came to the library on Monday morning was none other than author Mike Wade? The man who authored the laugh-out-loud series of "And Then It Happened" books with his wife, Laura, was living proof that bestselling authors don't have to be nerdy or dull. Mike visited students in Grades 3 to 6 to share with them some funny tales, and show them how the small words learned in Grade 1 can play a big role in creating amazing stories -- a secret J.K. Rowling and other authors know all too well!

Mike made everyone laugh with unrippable toilet paper and tongue twisters that caused many staff members to say the word "fart," to the delight of all students in the room. He read a couple of stories about the boys in "And Then It Happened" that we'd never heard before. He also surprised many in the audience when he took a swig from a bottle of Windex -- and quickly showed us the Kool-Aid packet that he had used earlier to make the blue juice that looked like Windex!

Days later, the kids are still talking about Mike and the hold list for the And Then It Happened books keeps getting bigger. Now when I look around, I wonder just how many students have a story in their heads that's itching to get onto paper. And then it happened... a future generation of writers is ready to make us laugh, cry, smile and thrill. Thanks, Mike and Laura!
