Our PatronOur Lady of Lourdes first appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a poor miller's daughter, on February 11th, 1858. It was a rainy Thursday, and Bernadette was out collecting firewood when she first encountered the apparition of a beautful young woman in the Grotto of Massabielle. The woman was dressed in a white gown with a sash of sky blue, and a white veil covered her head. Each of her feet was adorned with a golden rose, and a rosary was clasped in her hands. Bernadette felt in her pocket for her own rosary and took it, but was scared to do anything else. The Lady raised her rosary and crossed herself, and Bernadette managed to do the same. After they finished praying the rosary together, the Lady beckoned Bernadette to come to her, but the child was too scared to move and the Lady suddenly disappeared. The Lady appeared to Bernadette a total of eighteen times during the months of February and March. It came to pass that during her ninth visit, the Lady instructed Bernadette to drink and cleanse herself in the spring. Bernadette began to walk towards the nearby river, but the Lady said that it was not there and pointed to a rocky area to the left of the grotto. Bernadette dug away at this spot and revealed a spring, from which she drank. To this day, pilgrims visit this spring for the water's healing properties. During every visit, Bernadette asked the Lady repeatedly who she was, but she would only respond with a smile. It was not until the momentous sixteenth appearance that the Lady finally revealed to Bernadette who she was. "I am the Immaculate Conception." Our school thrives under the blessings of our patron, in a community of faith and love. |
