Uniform Policy
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School students wear their uniforms proudly as they reflect the positive atmosphere of our community.
Minimum Uniform: All pieces must be monogrammed and from McCarthy’s. Students may choose their daily uniform from any one of the following options:
TOP
- Oxford shirt (short or long-sleeved)
- golf shirt (short or long-sleeved)
- rugby shirt
The following must be worn with any of the above collared shirts or with a plain short sleeved crew-neck T-shirt in white or black solid colours only: (i.e. no writing, stripes, images or logos)
- sweatshirt in grey or black
- long sleeve V-neck sweater in grey
- vest sweater in black
- fleece vest in black
- zip polo sweatshirt
BOTTOM
- pants in black or khaki
- shorts in black or khaki
- kilt (females only)
- Capri style pants (females only)
Uniform Requirements:
- Uniforms are to be worn throughout the school day, and at all times while on school property (including the smoking area and parking lot) from the time of arrival at school until 15 minutes after the last bell. Students must be in uniform throughout the school day.
- Uniforms are to be neat, clean, and in good repair (no altering of style or colour)
- Shorts and skirts are to be worn at knee level.
- Extreme over-sizing or under-sizing is not allowed.
- All uniform shirts must be buttoned.
- Socks or tights that are worn must be in solid white, black, red, or grey colours.
- Appropriate footwear with no extreme colours or style must be worn.
- No tucking of pant legs into footwear.
- Any type of head covering (including hats, bandanas, headbands, and kerchiefs) is not to be worn in the school.
Hair should be kept clean, neat, and reasonably styled. No extreme hair colours or styles (such as Mohawks) will be allowed.
Wristbands of any type are not part of the school’s uniform and thus cannot be worn.
Face jewellery, other than earrings, is not allowed.
School administration is solely responsible for establishing what is considered to be appropriate and reasonable regarding accessories and styles.
Exceptions to the policy are at the discretion of the principal or designate.
The wearing of non-uniform clothing over or under the STA uniform is not allowed.
Students who are not in uniform or do not meet the uniform requirements, will report to the office. Their parents will be contacted and the appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken. The school administration reserves the right to suspend students from their remaining classes or to send home students who are not dressed in accordance with this uniform policy.
ACCESSORIES AND STYLES:
Any clothing, accessories (chains, symbols, jewellery, or other paraphernalia)
which: depict or suggest association with a gang, which may be considered
obscene or offensive, or may be associated with drug emblems, tobacco
or alcoholic beverage references, or which make a statement against
a race or religion, shall not be worn at school or in any way be present
at any school-related event.
TEAM or GAME DAYS
There is no provision in the uniform policy for students to wear any
other uniform than the prescribed school uniform - notwithstanding sports,
arts or other activities, unless so authorized by the school’s
administrative team.
UNIFORMS AND FIELD TRIPS
Students are expected to be in school uniform while on school-related
excursions. If the nature of the field trip calls for alternate dress,
the supervising teacher must seek permission from the school’s
administrative team.
INCLEMENT WEATHER ATTIRE
Coats and other non-uniform outerwear are to be stored in lockers when
students are in the school. Students who are coming in from the portables
are to take their coats, etc. off when entering the main building. However,
students may put their coats, etc. on the back of their chairs if they
have another class in the portables during the school day.
UNIFORMS and PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES
Uniforms consist of school shorts, school-crested T-shirt, sweat socks
and running shoes and may be purchased through the Physical Education
office during the first week of the semester. The Ontario Physical and
Health Education Association guidelines stipulate that jewellery of
any kind is not to be worn during physical education classes. This includes
all piercings.
Dress Code For Out-Of-Uniform Days
On out-of-uniform days, students may wear clothes that are not uniform items. Clothes that reveal bare midriffs or cleavage are not to be worn. Pants must be worn at the waist. Head coverings of any type are not permitted. Strapless blouses or shirts and muscle shirts may not be worn. Pant legs must be worn at the appropriate length and thus may not be rolled up. Capri style pants are permitted if they comply with the above.
Students must comply with the standard of dress outlined in the STA Uniform Policy.
All clothes worn on an out-of-uniform day must comply
with our Catholic values and beliefs in order to foster a positive learning
environment. Shirts displaying sayings, drawings or pictures contrary
to our values will not be allowed.
